Step 1 - Research What You Want.

Find inspirations - Though not necessary, it is always a good idea to gather some inspirations of what you want.

Go shopping - Even if your dead set on having a one-of-a-kind couture gown, consider trying on similar styles of your inspirations to see how that particular silhouette looks on your body type.

Step 2 - Interview the Designers

Show your designer the inspirations for gowns that you like and discuss in detail changes you would like made. Ask questions. Your designer needs to be someone you are comfortable working with. Some suggestions of questions to ask are....

Can I see pictures of gowns you have made? You’ll want to see the designer’s creations before making a decision on working with him/her.

Can I see some sketches of designs? You’ll want someone with the ability to sketch out what you are wanting before beginning the gown. This allows you to be certain that the two of you are thinking of the same design.

Do you provide the materials? Most designers work with you on picking out the fabrics and take care of the ordering of materials. In some cases, it’s even preferred that they get use a trusted quality supplier and often times it is more cost effective for you to purchase wholesale through them. However, if you are in charge of purchasing materials on your own, you will need to know specifics and amounts of each.

How many fittings are involved? It is important to know how long it will take to have your gown finished. Learn about the creation process.

Do you offer mock-up fittings? A mock-up fitting is your gown created in a cotton material. It allows you to see the design and fit before the actual material is cut. Any design changes can be made at this point. It is an important step in the design process and shouldn’t be missed.

Can I get a written estimate? Be sure to get the price written down so that you know what the gown is costing you and keep track of deposits as you go along.

Step 3 - Begin the Creation Process

Each designer has a different way of producing a gown. Though all the right steps need to be made, how they go about it can be relatively different. From this point, you are working with the schedule and process that was laid out before you during the design consultation. This is the point that your dream gown is being created. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be honest.

Just like not all store-bought gowns are designed and created with the same style and quality, not all custom designers and seamstresses are the same. When a choosing custom design and the person to make your gown, you’ll want to take a few steps to assure that you are choosing the perfect person for your needs.
